Text Box: Local June Fishing

Well, this is my favorite month of the year to fish - especially the availability of bigger fish.  This report proves to me that June remains the best:  It also proves that if you don't get out of the boat and wade, you won't do nearly as well.

Last Thursday, Paul and I fished "locally".  Although we ran up to the power plant and fished numerous areas from the boat, we did the most damage wading the Flag flat first thing and the Stump last .  The Flag yielded 10 trout for me and 4 for Paul.  Not any real giants but all good fish around 2-3 pounds.  We may have caught a couple at the plant but I forget.  We came back and decided to wade the Stump last.  When we got there Paul saw a few minnow birds diving on the far east end of the flat.  We waded over there and threw into them.  I hit first with a 5 pound gator.  Paul hit next with a whopping 6.5 pound trout at 26".  And that's all we got!

We went to Ft. Pierce today to JC Park with the intent of wading 2-3 spots on a good outgoing tide.  The first place we went to, Paul raised 2 snook (one at 31 inches) and 3 trout.  I only managed one fish.  BUT IT WAS MY BEST EVER TROUT AT 30" AND 10 POUNDS!!!

It kind of died there and we went to our second choice.,,,the middle of 3 spoils on the channel.  Paul went to the south end and I went north.  While Paul was pulling in 6 trout and a couple more snook, I had my second trophy of the day.  A 30+ POUND SNOOK (the boga grip only weighs to 30 pounds) almost spooled me on my 6.5' med. action, 6-12 lb. test rod with 25 lb. leader on 20lb. braided line.  I had to run after the damn thing just to be able to reel down line back onto the reel.  Just as I thought it was tired out it would run again and all I could do was hold on.  Eventually it did run out of gas and I brought it in after a truly great fight.  IT WAS 40" LONG!!!  Add 10 more trout (all 2-4 pounds - great fish) and a few more short snook and it was time for a beer and a dog at Frank 'n Steins.
