Text Box: Outside Fishing—Big Month

June turned out to be an extra-ordinary month for blue water fishing. With the cooperation of Mother Nature, various members had the opportunity to spend some time off shore, both locally and all the way across the Gulf Stream in the Bahamas. Captains Hal Fowler, John Pulley, and Barry Doying took a number of us offshore for some great fishing.

Capt. Hal organized a trip with Capt. V.J. Bell, aboard the Challenge, taking Barry Doying, Tom Lab, Art Warden, and John Pulley’  They caught a whole bunch of great fish, including a really nice Dolphin.  In addition to the great fishing, Capt. V.J. shared many of his very successful tricks of the trade.

On June 3rd, Capt. Barry Doying, aboard Reelfun, took Bob Middaugh out for some Sailfish hunting.  Barry landed a nice Sail with Bob pulling in a Dolphin.

On June 10th, Captains Hal Fowler and John Pulley, aboard the Roaring-2-Go and the Aquaholic respectively, took Bob Middaugh, Barry Doying, John Urie, and myself out for a day trip to the Bahamas. We left the dock at about 5:30 AM, and had our first hooks in the water in the Bahamas at about 8:15 AM.  That included a wait of almost 30 minutes for the railroad bridge to close.  The first catch was a Barracuda at about 8:45, which was the beginning of 5 cudas for Roaring-2-Go and 15 for Aquaholic.

The keepers for the day were 3 Dolphin, 1 Wahoo (rear half eaten by a shark), and a Rainbow Jack for Aquaholic, and 1 Dolphin (42 inch) and three Black Fin Tuna for Roaring-2-Go. To add to the excitement, Aquaholic hooked, but didn’t land,  two Marlin, one about 500 pounds!  On the way home, Capt. Hal opened up Roaring-2-Go and clearly exceeded 60 MPH.  The seas were just beautiful, which gave us all a truly wonderful day on the ocean.

On another trip from June 17 -19, Captain Barry Doying, John Pulley and John’s friend Mike aboard the Reelfun did the Bahamas again.  This time Barry and John each landed 10 Black Fin Tuna (20 total), releasing all but two, which they decided needed to be eaten.

On June 16, Captain Hal on Roaring-2-Go, took Tom and Debby Irvin, and Tracy from the pro-shop.  Tom landed his first sail fish, Tracy her second sailfish, and Debby a  Bonita.

This is what it’s all about……………don’t miss out the next time one of the captains puts out a call to go fishin’.
